Randy holds a BS in Physics from the University of Missouri at Rolla, an MS in Systems and Information Sciences from Syracuse University, and an MBA in International Marketing from Pepperdine University. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps while in college, and served in Vietnam 1970-1971 - discharged with the rank of Captain in 1972.
Mr. Smith has been a full-time instructor at Monterey Peninsula College since 1995, and taught part-time since 1987. He teaches in the Business Skills Center as well as courses in the Computer Science and Business departments. His passion is technology and Web publishing, and he serves as advisor to the MPC Computer Science Club.
Computer-Aided Design(AutoCAD) is offered in the Creative Arts department, with a focus on 3D modeling and photorealistic rendering. Some semesters, classes are taught at California State University at Monterey Bay, and courses and workshops are conducted in the community.
Before becoming an instructor, he worked in the high tech industry for such companies as IBM, Burroughs, and National Semiconductor. He was a founder of several startups, including Applied Micro Circuits Corporation and Mentor Graphics.
In addition to teaching at MPC, Randy still does computer consulting for companies which keeps him current in the field. His consulting firm, Caliber Associates (computersmiths), has been established in Monterey since 1985. More may be found at http://www.computersmiths.com/educat/.
His greatest joy is spending time with family, sharing many hobbies - including searching for lost ancestors, camping, traveling, and amateur science of any sort (archeology, paleontology, astronomy). He currently serves on the Board of a local non-profit community assistance organization, Global Uplift.
