Lesson Eleven –<= o:p>

Last weekend my wife and I rent= ed the movie “Hotel Rwanda”. It was about the civil war in that country. We had not known much about the problems in that country before then. The people of Rwanda are of two groups. The= Hutu are one group and the Tutsis are the other. At the time of the movie, the Hutus hated the Tutsis. In the early 1990’s, the Hutus took control of the government. Then they began to murder the Tuts= is.

The manager of a fancy European owned hotel is the main character in the movie. His name is Paul, and he is very kind. He is also friends with= many important government officials because those men often visit his hotel. Several hundred Tutsis are hiding = in the hotel after the killing begins. They are safe because Paul is protecting them from the Hutus. <= /o:p>

Over one million Tutsis died in= Rwanda = during this short time. No countries= and the United Nations helped stop the killing. The world is often a very terrible place.

It is the words in the= Y place that really say something about the subject.

Y can be= a Predicator. Predicators follow the Xwords am, are, is, was, and were.

1. Noun Phrase, names the subject (person, place, or thing)

Jo is a student. MPC= is a school. Monterey is a sta= te.

2. Adjective Phrase, describes the subject (tall, soft, friendly)<= o:p>

Jo is tall. MPC is beautiful. Mary is friendly.

3. Prepositional Phrase, a group of words that begins with a preposition. (in, on, at, ov= er, etc)

= Jo is at work. &nb= sp; MPC is in central Cali= fornia.

Y can al= so be a Verb.

4. Verb with time (No = 211;S, -S, and Past Forms)

Jo works in Monterey.

"Cultural Change Coming in Chile"

Michelle Bachelet is Chile's first female president. The world was very surprised because Chile is a male-dominated society. Chile had never elec= ted a woman president before they completed this election last month. Chile is still a very conservative country even though divorce became legal two years ago. In Chile men make 40% more money t= han women although they do the same jobs. Bachelet has already ch= anged the government because she gav= e 50% of government jobs to women. = She has also made a new law. When Chile has an election, half = the candidates must be women. Many people are satisfied with Bachelet, but many people do not like her. = They do not trust her ability to lead a government. Many Chileans also do not like her= because she is separated from her husband and she is a single parent of three children. Bachelet has told many interesting stories to the newspapers since she became President.

In 1952 when Chile's president of= fered a woman a Cabinet position in the government for the first time, she had to= ask her husband before she would a= ccept it. In 2006 when Bachelet called several men to offer them posts in the government, they had to ask their wives before they could accept.

You can combine two sentences with an includer. The includers make a relationship between the two sentences. For example,=

These includers make the "included sentence" a shifter.
