languages. In fact, there are many layers of differences between these
languages: vocabulary, sounds, word forms, grammar, and word-order.<span

w:st=3D"on">ava</st1:PersonName>jos translated messages nearly instantaneou=
sly
and extremely accurately, demonstrating that the languages must also be very
similar. Until this time linguists had mistakenly believed that languages
differed from each other because they were reflections of human culture that
had developed over time in diverse environments in relative isolation
(Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis).<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>It =
had
been believed that speakers of different languages held different views of =
the
world and were not able to truly understand each other.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Fortunately, this language relativ=
ity
perspective is no longer main-stream.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

&#8220;code-talkers&#8221;, was one of the few white people at that time who

style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>He grew up playing with N<st1:Pers=

</span>His parents were missionaries living on the reservation.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This is not unusual.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Children do this all the time in a=
ll languages.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In five years or less, children do=
 what
computer scientists haven&#8217;t been able to teach a computer to do in 50
years &#8211; speak a human language, which ultimately brings us to the
question &#8220;how are children able to learn language so quickly and at s=
uch
a young age?&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>It is tru=
ly an
incredible accomplishment.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.=
0pt'><span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Cogn=
itive
scientists, who study how humans process information, believe children must
have some head start on learning a language.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Children must prepossess knowledge=
 of
what languages are like.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>They=
 must
have some innate knowledge about the structures all languages contain and m=
ust
also have innate abilities to recognize those structures.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This head start was named
&#8220;Universal Grammar&#8221;, by Noam Chomsky, the linguist who first
suggested this hypothesis.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;
</span>Steven Pinker, Brain and Cognitive Sciences Professor at MIT renamed
&#8220;Universal Grammar&#8221; the &#8220;Language Instinct&#8221;.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:14.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.=

children are not born prepared to learn one specific language such as Ameri=
can

be prepared to learn the language of where they are.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>In other words, Universal Gr=
ammar
(UG) must equip children to learn all the possible human languages, all 10,=

of them.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>And, in fact, =
this
is what is found: &#8220;Any child is able to learn any language if immerse=
d in
that language environment at an early age.&#8221;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This implies that all languages mu=
st
have things in common, similarities.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>They must be the same at some level.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>&#8220;All languages must follow a
finite set of innate principles, although they appear different because of
innate finite options that they <span class=3DGramE>choose,</span>
parameters.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This is the
Principles and Parameters Theory.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>Noam Chomsky writes, &#8220;If grammar were bread, then flour and li=
quid
would be the universal rules and the parameters would be yeast, eggs, sugar,
jalapenos, etc., which would yield a different product when added to the
universals.&#8221;<o:p></o:p></span></p>

are included among the natural human languages and have been found to devel=
op
spontaneously among communities of the deaf if given the opportunity.<span

universal principles as all other human languages and are equally well suit=
ed
