The Cooperative Work Experience Program

This is an academic program which effectively uses industrial, governmental, educational and other business organizations as off-campus "classrooms."  It is an opportunity for students to use work experience for training, career planning and personal development, while they earn college credits.  A student must be enrolled in at least seven semester units (including the CO-OP course) to qualify for the program.  One to four units are possible, depending on how many hours a student works a week.  (Please see the Schedule of Classes CO-OP 91 Course Information Sheet with chart for paid and volunteer categories:  hours per week and units.)

MPC offers the following two programs:  CO-OP 91 and CO-OP 92

  • CO-OP 91: Cooperative Work Experience (1-4 units)
This is a planned, supervised work experience program for students working in a job related to his/her declared major or career goal.  This course may be taken for a total of sixteen units.
  • CO-OP 92: Cooperative Work Experience (1-3 units)
This is a planned, supervised work experience program for students working in a job not directly related to their declared college major or career goal.  This course may be taken for a total of six units.

These units may be applied to an associate degree at MPC and are transferable as electives to California State Universities.

See the current schedule of classes or the home page for the complete listing of 8 weeks CO-OP courses (6 weeks for summer session). See the Course Information Sheet and the Course Requirements for additional information.

What Does A Student Need To Do In Order To Participate In The CO-OP Program?

A student must register for the appropriate course and attend an orientation meeting which is held in the Library & Technology Center, Room 216.  Attend only 1 of the following scheduled 20 minute meetings:

                                                                 June  16, 17, 18, 19 or 20

at 12:15 p.m.

A student may attend an Orientation Meeting first and register later. If a student misses one of the scheduled meetings, an individual session can be arranged with CO-OP Director Lincoln Curtis. A student must register for the CO-OP course and attend an Orientation Meeting or he/she will be dropped from the course.

During the Orientation Meeting, a student fills out an application, is assigned an MPC Faculty Advisor, and receives all of the necessary forms and information for the course.

Some CO-OP courses begin at week 4 and week 8 of the semester. These courses are designed for students who do not register within the first two weeks of the semester.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE?

A student chooses 3 projects to be completed on the job. CO-OP can not give credit for performing your normal duties, so these expanded projects related to your job should focus on new knowledge, skills and abilities. These projects must be approved by your Work Supervisor and an assigned MPC Faculty Advisor. A student is required to contact his/her MPC Faculty Advisor for progress reports 2 times during the semester and write a 3 page Final Report. See the Course Information and Final Report sheets for more detailed information on the CO-OP course requirements.

 Final Report

Your 3-page report must be in essay form and may be typed or legibly written in ink on 8 ½ x 11 paper. The heading must include your name, your MPC Faculty Advisor’s name, and the date.

The theme of your paper is to be your objectives and how they were achieved. This is an integral part of the learning process and should be undertaken with care. Your paper should deal thoroughly with the following:

  A.              The Plan:

After listing each objective, describe why you selected it and how you originally planned to complete it.

 B.              The Results:

Report on how effectively you met your objectives.

1.                  What aspects of the plan worked?

2.                  What changes did you make from the original  plan?

 C.              Review:

The usefulness of the objectives selected.

1.                  To yourself.

2.                  To your employer.

IMPORTANT:  In order to receive credit for Cooperative Work Experience you must submit this paper to your MPC Faculty Advisor by the deadline. There is a 20-point penalty for late papers.
