SPEECH COMMUNICATION

SPCH 1 PUBLIC SPEAKING

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course focuses on the theory and techniques of public speaking in a democratic society. Emphasis is placed on discovery, develop­ment, and criticism of ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, presentation, and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches.

SPCH 2 SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course focuses on principles of communication in a variety of group contexts. It emphasizes theory, application, and evaluation of group communication processes, including problem solving, conflict management, decision making, and leadership.

SPCH 3 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

Students learn principles of verbal and nonverbal transactions that occur in relationships. The course includes the study of theory and research findings and their application to communication in interper­sonal relationships in personal and professional contexts.

SPCH 4 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course is an introduction to intercultural communication in domestic and/or global contexts. It emphasizes the influence of cultures, languages, and social patterns on how members commu­nicate with themselves and with members of different ethnic and cultural groups. Theory and knowledge of effective communication within and between cultures is addressed.

SPCH 5  ORAL INTERPRETATION

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course provides an introduction to performance studies. Emphasis is placed on analysis, appreciation, and application of theories of interpretative performance of various forms of literature including poetry, prose and drama.

SPCH 10  INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION THEORY

This course explores the basic history, assumptions, principles, and methods of human communication as an academic field of study.

SPCH 52 COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course focuses on communication concepts and theory as they relate to the workplace. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal, small group, and public speaking skills. Topics include self-concept, listening, climate, cultural and gender Influences, ethics, organizational networks, interviewing, team building, and business speaking.

SPCH 54 LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION

3 units • LG-P/NP • Three hours lecture

This course is designed to assist students interested in developing or improving communication skills relevant to leadership. Theories of leadership are investigated, and students learn how to apply both knowledge and skills to diverse small group and public speaking situations. Students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained outside of class. Campus and/or community involvement is a required element of this course. Also offered as Personal Development 54; credit may be earned only once.
