DLI Frequently Asked Questions

How do my DLI language credits apply toward the degree?

The foreign language credit requirement for MPC/DLI AA degree is 19 units beginning Fall, 2000. Before Fall 2000, 20 units were required for the major requirement.

Students who started a basic language at DLI since Oct. 90 earn 45 semester units (hours) of which 30 are lower division semester units and 15 are upper division semester units. MPC will accept the 30 lower division units. Of these beginning Fall 2000, nineteen units meet the foreign language requirement, three meet the 3-unit Humanities requirements, three meet the 3-unit Social Science requirement, and three units meet the 3-unit Life Long Learning requirement, and two units count as electives toward the 60 unit degree requirement.

What is Foreign Language Cooperative Work Experience?

Foreign Language Cooperative Work Experience (COOP 91.19) is a popular four semester unit course available to DLI students pursing the associate degree. Participants are required to develop three measurable learning objectives which demonstrate growth on the job and in the language. These objectives are approved by a chosen DLI Language instructor and the Foreign Language Coop instructor. Many students choose objectives they have been assigned as class requirements. Students are required to participate in several meeting with the Foreign Language instructor for the purpose of monitoring progress in the course. The Foreign Language Coop instructor will visit DLI and confer with you and your language instructor during the course. Together they rate your achievement of your objectives. The student is required to submit a final paper summarizing the accomplishment of the objects to the Foreign Language Coop instructor. This MPC course supports your language study. In addition to the final paper, the student is also evaluated on meeting program responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the student to make and keep all appointments with the Foreign Language Coop instructor. Cooperative experience can be taken more than once. Foreign Language Coop students must take at least 3 semester hours concurrently with their Coop Work Experience class.

What is the Independent Fitness Course?

The Independent Fitness Program (PFIT 50) is an independent physical fitness course students can take from MPC. Participants in the course record all their physical activities in a log. To earn one (1) semester unit, students must log in 32 hours of physical activity during the term. A student must log in 64 hours of activity to earn 2 semester units. This course has proven to be a popular option because most service members are on a demanding physical training schedule anyway. Military physical training (PT) applies toward the required hours of physical activity. In addition to keeping a log, the student is required to read and demonstrate understanding or general fitness and nutrition concepts. The Independent Fitness course can be taken more than once.

What are the Living Room Series Courses?

The Distance Learning:Living Room Series classes are transferable correspondence, video, and on-line courses that count toward meeting the MPC residency requirement. Living Room Series courses do not require regular attendance at the main campus. Most courses have an initial class meeting during which class requirements and agenda are outlined. The student works independently to complete the course requirements. MPC’s library houses tapes for all courses requiring video tapes or audio tapes. For selected courses, audio/visual tapes are available from the Aiso Library on DLI campus. Course offerings vary each term.

When will MPC evaluate my military experience and credits from outside sources?

Upon successful completion of one or more semester hours with MPC, an assessment of your standing can be done by an MPC counselor. You must make arrangement for this appointment. Insure you have official transcripts of all transfer credit forwarded to MPC early in your pursuit of the degree. Degree-seeking students who have attended other college prior to Monterey Peninsula college must have official copies of previous college work mailed directly to the Admissions and Records Office at Monterey Peninsula College. Documented military experience must be forwarded as well if you intend to apply credits for experience toward your degree. A student will receive credit towards the associate degree from Monterey Peninsula College if the institution was regionally accredited at the time of attendance. The Education Center can assist with having DLI credits, documented military experience and testing credits forwarded to MPC. The Education Center has the necessary transcript request forms, addresses and fee information.
