HUMS 51 INTRODUCTION TO HOME VISITATION

This course is designed to introduce the student to the field of home visitation as a means to help families develop effective life skills. Topics include dynamics of family interaction, community resources, child development, child and elder abuse as they relate to the role of the home visitor or Human Services paraprofessional.

HUMS 53A COUNSELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE PARAPROFESSIONAL I

This course covers concepts and methods of interview-counseling techniques appropriate for paraprofessionals in human service settings. Primary emphasis is on the use of facilitating skills and group dynamics. Orientation to campus and community resources and referral process for human services workers are addressed.

HUMS 53B COUNSELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE PARAPROFESSIONAL II

This course provides an in-depth study of those aspects of counseling theory and practice that are applicable to paraprofessional placements where the paraprofessional human services worker as the primary provider of service must have advanced problem solving and intervention skills. Topics include grief and loss, group counseling, conflict resolution, suicide prevention, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental illness.
