Program of Study

The program of study at the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing includes both general education and nursing to provide the scope of knowledge required to assure the delivery of safe and quality nursing care.  The curriculum allows students an opportunity to apply nursing skills in a variety of health care settings.  Students who successfully complete the program are eligible for the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).  Graduates are awarded the Associate of Science degree with a nursing major. The nursing program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Admission Requirements

Required course work for entry into the program includes high school graduation or the equivalent; meeting the MPC mathematics and reading proficiency requirements; college anatomy, physiology, microbiology, developmental psychology, pharmacology, and English.  All coursework must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Applicants must achieve a satisfactory success index score and pre-entrance readiness score on the ATI TEAS exam in order to be qualified for admission.  Due to space limitations, completion of prerequisite courses does not guarantee admission to the program.  The success index score is calculated using a combination of overall GPA, core science GPA, college English GPA, and reduced for repetition of core science courses, due to unsuccessful attempts, as recommended by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

The next application filing date will be from September 26 through December 12, 2011 for those applying to enter the program in fall of 2012. Aplications will be available at the School of Nursing office on September 19th during regular office hours.

Qualified applicants for Fall 2012 are accepted on a first come first served basis, based on date of submitting a complete application.  Time of day of when your application is submitted does not apply; applicants who submit a complete applications on the same day will be considered as applying simultaneously.

If there are more qualified applicants than can be accommodated, random selection will be used to determine who is accepted.

A completed application must include a complete and signed application form and official transcripts with grades for each required course, with the exception of NURS 100 Pharmacology and PSYCH 25 Child and Adult Development.  It is acceptable to submit documentation of enrollment current for these two courses.  They must be completed during the term with a grade of "C" or better.

Attach official transcripts; if courses were taken at another school, transcripts must be in a sealed envelope. If courses were taken at MPC you can obtain an "unofficial" transcript on the MPC website.

Applicants who applied for class entering Fall 2011 who were placed on the waiting list and not called to attend must reapply for Fall 2012 admission.  The previous application and transcripts may be picked up at the School of Nursing office to use for the Fall 2012 application.

If an applicant is accepted for a specific class, and chooses to defer, this option is available once and for one year only.

Advanced placement is available for Licensed Vocation Nurses (LVN).  This includes LVNs wishing to be admitted under the Board of Registered Nursing regulations 1429, the 30 unit option. Advanced placement is considered on a space-available basis. Nursing Program courses may be challenged through examination and clinical assessment.  MPC policy "credit by examination" is followed as well as BRN regulation 1430.  Please make an appointment with Director School of Nursing for more information.

PLEASE NOTE:Check this site often for policy changes. There have been some course completion requirement changes for those submitting applications in Fall of 2012, for the class enrolling in fall of 2013.  Please compare these requirements here.
