Daniel Phillips - Head Coach

Daniel Phillips enters his seventh season as Head Coach for the MPC Lobos Baseball Program. A local, Coach Phillips grew up in Seaside and attended Monterey High School. Phillips played for the MPC Lobos after high school where he was the Team Captain and earned All League Honors. After MPC, Phillips moved on to play for nationally ranked Sonoma State University. After college, he began his playing and coaching career in the professional leagues in Germany.

Coach Phillips’ coaching career began as Head Coach for the Holwickede Joboxers, a professional organization in Northern Germany. There he led the Joboxers to the German Northern League Championship. Arriving back in Monterey in 2000, Phillips was hired as the Head Assistant Coach at MPC. Phillips’ coaching career led him down to San Diego City College in 2001 and 2002 as the hitting and infield coach for the SDCC Knights. In his first season as Head Coach for the MPC Lobos in 2003, Coach Phillips led the team to a school record of twenty-one victories (21-20 overall, 12-12 conference).

Coach Phillips is currently working as an Associate Scout for the Milwaukee Brewers.  He holds a B.S. Degree in Kinesiology and a Minor in Psychology from San Diego State University as well as a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and Sport from the University of New Mexico Highlands.

Vince Herring- Pitching Coach

Coach Herring enters his third year heading up the pitching staff.  Coach Herring attended Sonoma State University from 1987-89, majoring in sport Psychology.  Vince broke many single season records at Sonoma State and is a mebmer of SSU's Hall of Fame.  In 1989 Coach Herring signed with the San Francisco Giants.  In 1991 while with the San Jose Giants, he compiled a 11-3 record and finished his pitching career in AA with the Shreveport Captains.  Vince began is coaching career as pitching coach for Sonoma State University.  Most recently Coach Herring was the pitching coach for Cal State Monterey Bay.  Vince resides in Salinas with his wife Sheri Ruggeri-Herring.  He enjoys traveling, fishing, photography and his three Beagles (Billy, Nico, and little Sunday).

 

 

Kalev Betancourt- Assistant Coach

Coach Betancourt enters his third season as Assistant Coach under Coach Phillips’ staff.  Coach K grew up in Hollister and graduated from San Benito High in 2001.  Kalev played two years for the MPC Lobos in 2002 and for Coach Phillips in 2003.  While at MPC ,Kalev played center field and was a team captain.  After MPC, Betancourt earned a scholarship to Graceland University in Iowa.  After starting for Graceland in his junior and senior seasons, he went on to become an Assistant Coach for Graceland in 2006.  Coach K graduated from Graceland University with a B.S. in Computer Science and currently resides in Hollister.  Kalev most currently signed a contract to play professionally in the European leagues with the Dortmund Wanderers.

Trevor Howell - Catching/Hitting

Coach Howell enters his first year on the Lobos staff.  A former 1st Team All-Leaguer for MPC, Coach Howell grew up in local Pacific Grove.  At Pacific Grove High School, Trevor established himself as one of the most prolific high school power hitters in the State of California.  During his high school career, he hit 43 home runs which is three shy of the all time state record and No. 1 in Northern California.  After high school he earned a scholarship to play for Division I Cal Poly.  After a season ending shoulder injury he found himself playing for Coach Phillips and the Lobos in 2005.  Coach Howell then earned a scholarship to play Division II powerhouse Sonoma State University.  While at Sonoma, Trevor helped lead the Seawolves to the D-2 College World Series.  Trevor graduated from SSU with his B.S. in Kinesiology.  Coach Howell recently signed a contract to play professionally in the European Leagues with the Dortmund Wanderers. 

 

Andy Casper - Pitching

Coach Casper enters his first year on the Lobos staff.  At New Prairie High School in Indiana Andy was a team MVP and 1st Team All Leaguer.  Andy headed out to California and played for Coach Phillips in 2004 where he earned All League Honors as a pitcher.  After MPC, Coach Casper went on to pitch for Division I University of Indiana.  At Indiana he earned a degree in both Sociology and Psychology.  He currently resides in Carmel with his girlfriend Ashley.
