AGS Membership

Initial Membership

A student may attain initial membership if the student has completed twelve (12) semester units of college work (courses must be degree applicable) in a maximum of three semesters at any recognized institution of higher education and has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.  No units acquired more than two years prior to application for initial membership shall be used prohibitively.

High school students who graduated with a minimum GPA of 3.5 or who are life members of the California Scholarship Federation are eligible to become Initial members during their first semester in a community college.

Initial membership shall be confirmed after verification of the GPA by a faculty advisor and the accumulation of service points as specified by the executive board.  It is the applicant's responsibility to submit a record of service points earned to a faculty advisor on or before the point sheet due date.

Continuing Membership

After one semester of confirmed initial membership, an applicant may attain continuing membership by submitting his/her application with membership dues, achieving (for the previous semester) not less than a 3.0 GPA in courses of recognized college standing, and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in courses of recognized college standing (degree applicable courses).

Continuing members will receive one semester grace for every semester of earned continuing membership.  There shall not be two consecutive grace periods.  The confirmation of membership is made after verification of GPA by the faculty advisor and accumulation of required number of service points. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit a record of service points earned to a faculty advisor on or before the point sheet due date.

Continuing members will receive one semester's  grace for every semester of earned continuing membership if the member's GPA. falls below 3.00. There shall be no two consecutive grace periods.

Permanent Membership

Student members may apply for permanent membership during the semester in which they complete a minimum of 60 semester (or 90 quarter) letter-graded units in degree appropriate courses with at least half of them completed at a community college. Applicants with as few as 54 semester (or 81 quarter) degree appropriate units may be eligible for permanent membership provided they have enough units graded CR to make up the required total. Applicants must also meet ONE of the requirements below:

  • The member has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better in all recognized college work and has been a member of AGS, Inc., for at least one term, or
  • The member has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better in all recognized college work and has been a member of AGS, Inc., for at least two terms.

In determining eligibility, units must be counted beginning with those most recently completed and going back chronologically until the number of units is reached.  If any units from a semester (or quarter) are used to establish eligibility, all units in graded courses on that and all intervening transcripts must enter into the calculation of the GPA.

Any courses completed two years or more prior to application for permanent membership, whether at a community college or other institution, shall not be used to prohibit any person from becoming a permanent member, provided these units not be used to meet the minimum number of required units.
