HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
-
Any campus spillage of a dangerous chemical or radioactive material is to be reported immediately by phoning College Security. [Dangerous chemicals are defined/identified in the MPC Chemical Hygiene Plan]
-
When reporting, be specific about the nature of the substance involved, its approximate quantity, and the campus location. College Security will contact the necessary specialized authorities and medical personnel.
-
Vacate the affected area at once and seal it off to prevent further contamination of others. Required first aid and cleanup by specialized authorities should be started at once.
-
Anyone who may be contaminated because he/she was in the immediate area affected by the spill must:
- Avoid contact with others as much as possible
- Remain in the vicinity
- Give his/her name(s) to College Security Officer
-
If necessary, because of the danger involved and/or if directed to do so by College Security, activate the building alarm system and follow the remaining steps [take this booklet with you!]
- Notify your supervisor or instructor, then
- Evacuate the building by quickly walking to the nearest exit,
- Alert other people as you go
-
Regarding people with disabilities:
- Leave the elevators for those with disabilities
- If not on the ground floor, direct those with disabilities to elevator lobbies until further direction is provided by College Security Personnel.
- Assist people with disabilities as necessary in exiting the building on ground level floors.
-
Once outside, move to a clear area at least 50 feet away from the affected building. Remain upwind of the building if a volatile substance is involved. Keep walkways clear for emergency vehicles.
-
To the best of your ability, and without re-entering the building, assist police officers or college staff in determining that everyone has left the building safely.
-
An Emergency Command Post will be set up near the emergency site. Keep clear of the command post unless you have important information to report.
-
DO NOT RETURN TO A BUILDING UNTIL TOLD TO DO SO OR UNTIL THE ALL CLEAR SIGNAL HAS SOUNDED.
