HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

  1. Any campus spillage of a dangerous chemical or radioactive material is to be reported immediately by phoning College Security. [Dangerous chemicals are defined/identified in the MPC Chemical Hygiene Plan]

  2. When reporting, be specific about the nature of the substance involved, its approximate quantity, and the campus location.
College Security will contact the necessary specialized authorities and medical personnel.

  3. Vacate the affected area at once and seal it off to prevent further contamination of others. Required first aid and cleanup by specialized authorities should be started at once.

  4. Anyone who may be contaminated because he/she was in the immediate area affected by the spill must:

    1. Avoid contact with others as much as possible
    2. Remain in the vicinity
    3. Give his/her name(s) to College Security Officer

  5. If necessary, because of the danger involved and/or if directed to do so by College Security, activate the building alarm system and follow the remaining steps [take this booklet with you!]

    1. Notify your supervisor or instructor, then
    2. Evacuate the building by quickly walking to the nearest exit,
    3. Alert other people as you go

  6. Regarding people with disabilities:

    1. Leave the elevators for those with disabilities
    2. If not on the ground floor, direct those with disabilities to elevator lobbies until further direction is provided by College Security Personnel.
    3. Assist people with disabilities as necessary in exiting the building on ground level floors.

  7. Once outside, move to a clear area at least 50 feet away from the affected building. Remain upwind of the building if a volatile substance is involved. Keep walkways clear for emergency vehicles.

  8. To the best of your ability, and without re-entering the building, assist police officers or college staff in determining that everyone has left the building safely.

  9. An Emergency Command Post will be set up near the emergency site. Keep clear of the command post unless you have important information to report.

  10. DO NOT RETURN TO A BUILDING UNTIL TOLD TO DO SO OR UNTIL THE ALL CLEAR SIGNAL HAS SOUNDED.
