CalWORKs– California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids.
New California law limits the length of time a person can be on public assistance.
You may have already been called by your caseworker for a welfare-to-work planning meeting. Read this brochure carefully, keep it, and refer to it in the future. You have choices...and important decisions to make.
Are you going to take a job at minimum wage or learn skills with a future?
The smart choice is to develop skills NOW, while you still have benefits. Almost all CalWORKs clients are eligible for a year of approval job training, maybe more. Ask you CWES worker how much time you have. You won’t get this chance again, so get as much training as you can now. Training and moving up in the job is the key to making a better life for yourself and your children.
Will you get your training at a community college or someplace else?
Six reasons why community college is the smart choice.
1. Fast. In just weeks or months you’ll be already for a good job with a future.
2. Virtually inexpensive. Your tuition is waived for eligible CalWORKs participant. You only pay a $10 Student Center fee, $17 Health fee, and $5 Student Body Fee per semester.
3. Nearby. Monterey Peninsula College is located within Monterey near freeways and bus lines.
4. Helpful. Counselors, tutors and other professionals are ready to help.
5. Practical. Training is designed for high demand occupational areas and you learn how to find that new job.
6. Flexible. You can always come back to continue your training while you work, build your skills, and prepare for a better job.
Do you have children?
Monterey Peninsula College has a quality preschool instructional program for children from 2-6 years of age who are toilet trained and in good health. MPC also has a Toddler Program for children 18-36 months of age. At least one parent must be a student taking a minimum of six units per semester and pursuing a vocational or educational goal. Tuition is on a sliding scale, based on income and family size. Parents of children enrolled in the Center must take a parent education class for college credit and participate in the Center for one to three hours a week.
Children may attend full-time or part-time as long as they are attend a minimum of two days a week, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
