We are all concerned regarding the possible outbreak of the H1N1 Swine Flu on our campus. Our goal is to decrease exposure to the regular flu, to decrease exposure to the new H1N1 strain and limit any disruption throughout the flu season.

We are asking students and staff to follow the recommendation from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Students and staff should stay at home when experiencing flu like symptoms for at least 24 hours. They should not return to school until they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever reducing medications. Please report you flu like symptoms/illness to Student Health Services (SHS) which is monitoring influenza like illness on campus. Please call SHS at 831-646-4017 or email keyler@mpc.edu. SHS is asking instructors to make accomodations to students with influenza like symptoms/illness. Please let SHS know if you need assistance.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Students and staff that are considered high risk who experience flu like symptoms should seek treatment from their health care provider as soon as possible.  They should seek early treatment with antiviral medications if indicated. People at high risk would include those who are pregnant, have asthma or diabetes, have compromised immune systems or neuromuscular diseases.
  • All students and staff are encouraged to seek an influenza shot for the regular seasonal flu and the H1N1 Swine Flu when it becomes available. The VNA has been asked to provide the vaccine to our campus when and if it becomes available. There is no date yet.

We will be updating this message on our web site on a regular basis as information related to the intensity and spread of the regular seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu becomes available.
