The TRiO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from limited income and first-generation college backgrounds. Monterey Peninsula College host three of the TRiO Programs: Student Support Services, also known as College Readiness, Upward Bound, and Math/Science Upward Bound. College Readiness is designed to provide study skills and personal development for college students; whereas, the Upward Bound and Math/Science Upward Bound Programs are designed to assist high school students graduate from high school and successfully enter post-secondary education.

Student Support Services also known as College Readiness on the MPC campus, offers a variety of services to college students, which range from study skills classes to counseling and university tours. Services are offered to MPC students in a re-entry level, first semester format, or in a variety of instructional support classes, career and transfer services and/or workshops. The program has been recognized statewide for its re-entry semester that offers comprehensive study skills instruction in math, science, and communication combined with college orientation, career counseling and personal development classes.

Upward Bound is a pre-college program that features an after school tutorial component and computer lab that are open to students four days a week from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the TRiO Learning Center (TLC) located on the MPC campus. Personal, academic, and career counseling is provided for each student. During the academic year, Saturday workshops feature study skills development, mentor speakers, personal development opportunities, and periodic visits to four-year campuses. Students receive assistance with SAT/ACT test preparation and college and financial aid application completion assistance. UB also conducts a Summer Academy where students take daily classes in study skills development for math, science, foreign language, communication and computer literacy.

Math/Science Upward Bound offers an intensive summer academy in marine biology for TRiO eligible students from all over federal region IX (i.e. Arizona, California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Pacific Islands). These high school students reside on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus for six weeks and follow a rigorous schedule of classes in marine biology, mathematics, communications, foreign language, and computer skills. The goal of the program is to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college students entering into math and science majors and careers. Along with the rigorous academic program, a personal development class is offered to foster self-awareness, understanding of others and college orientation. A residential counselor deals with personal and emotional problems, while a high staff to student ratio results in lots of personal attention to students. The program achieves a good balance of social and recreational activities along with a demanding academic curriculum where basic skill development is imbedded in core curricula. Equally important is the residential experience that simulates the college atmosphere for high school students.
