Jump Start Summer Bridge Students Get Ahead!
This summer, MPC launched its first official program under the Title V HSI Grant serving over 100 first-year college students through the JumpStart Summer Bridge program. The program introduces incoming high school graduates to college, provides opportunities to develop relationships with faculty/staff and academic peers, and challenges students to take on leadership roles. One of the primary goals of the JumpStart program is to eliminate barriers to student success in the subjects of math and English by strengthening academic skills and cultivating a community of support to enhance students’ confidence in college and promote academic excellence as they begin their academic journeys. Classroom instruction is combined with a critical counseling component to provide culturally relevant workshops, community building, and exposure to the variety of academic programs at MPC. Summer Bridge scholars must be enrolled full-time and are typically the first in their families to attend college.
Since it's inception as a pilot program in 2015, JumpStart has grown exponentially. The 2019 cohort represented 17 high schools; 82% were students from Latinx backgrounds and under-served populations, and included the largest undocumented student participation to date.
The program's success is based on a strong campus partnership with many departments working closely in the planning and execution of the program. Special thanks to our Student Equity and Achievement department, EOPS program, Facilities Team, Athletics department, Summer Bridge faculty & staff, and CSUMB GearUp program for making this year uniquely successful!
