Meet James Quigley!

Started at MPC - finishing at M.I.T.!

Post Date:05/31/2017 4:42 PM

James Quigley, Army Veteran from North Carolina, always wanted to get back to Monterey, so when he got out of the Army in 2015 he packed his bags and headed to the West Coast. James enlisted in the military straight out of high school. With family roots in the Army, it seemed like the natural thing to do.  While in the Army, he moved around the US quite a bit - with duty stations in Missouri, Arizona, Washington State, California (learning Chinese at the Defense Language Institute (DLI)), North Carolina, and then abroad, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After serving his country for 7 1/2 years, James decided it was time to leave the military and go back to school. Since he had no prior college experience, he knew he needed to get a good foundation to be successful, so he could pursue his dreams.

student-with-james-story2James' experiences in Monterey at DLI had a huge impact on him.  He loved the West Coast and decided Monterey was the right place to start on his educational path. Always pragmatic, he decided on Engineering as a major after looking at career opportunities and earning potential - basically using a cost benefit analysis approach to drive his academic decisions. In Feb 2015 he started classes at MPC, jumping right into Engineering and the other hard sciences. James' competitive nature helped him excel at MPC, with a 3.9+ cumulative grade point he is a brilliant student, but he credits much of his success to MPC and the numerous faculty mentors who have influenced him. James states emphatically, "I really couldn't have done it without MPC!"

He recognizes that MPC gave him the solid fundamentals and academic confidence he needed to succeed at a world class institution, like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.)   James applied to many top-notch schools as he was preparing to transfer; UCSC, UC San Diego, UCLA and Stanford (to name a few).  He was accepted to every one of these - but chose M.I.T. because it is considered #1 in his (Engineering/Computer Science) field.

This summer, James will be moving to Boston to start school in the Fall. He has big ambitions, hoping to combine his interest in Biology and Engineering to find a career in creating prosthetic and bionic limbs, and ultimately (maybe) owning his dream yacht!
