Dear Students,

Yesterday we received some troubling news from the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. regarding the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Please know that access to higher education at Monterey Peninsula College is available to all and financial aid is available to those who qualify under the California State Dream Act. Please see the attached memo from California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley that will give further assurances to each of you.

The MPC Trustees, the MPC community, and I stand with each of you and we are ready to help you reach your educational goals. It is appalling that our nation's current divisive political culture has potentially created fear and anxiety for our most treasured resource, you. Take heart that even in this political climate, there is support for you and programs like DACA—on both sides of the political divide—in Washington, D.C. and throughout this nation.

The California Community College system is in the process of lobbying for you. We are 114 colleges and over 2 million students strong. Our faculty and staff are your advocates. Please stay focused on your academic success and goals.

You are among the nation's most talented students. You remind us of how industry and hard work can overcome challenges and have done so since the founding of this nation. You, uniquely, remind us of the American Dream and what we should aspire to as a nation that cares for all of its people. You are called “Dreamers,” and we share your dreams.

Stay strong.

With you!

Walt
