MONTEREY, CA - Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) is pleased to announce it has received a $337,000 grant  through the California Community Colleges’ California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative grant program, Improving Online CTE Pathways.

Funding from this grant will result in substantial improvements to and expansion of MPC’s online course and degree offerings, with emphasis on Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.  A crucial component in MPC’s ability to deliver high quality CTE programs and facilitate student program completion is to offer more courses identified within career pathways, online. Currently, MPC has approved 231 courses for online delivery which will allow students to complete most general education requirements as well as major requirements and electives for 17 different associate degrees and 9 certificates fully-online.

“We really appreciate the State’s investment in online CTE programs,” states Dr. Jon Knolle, Dean of Instruction. “Online students represent one of our fastest growing demographics at MPC, and this grant will allow us to keep up with student demands and stay ahead of the curve in the constantly changing field of online education.”

In 2017-18, online students accounted for 14.27% of MPC’s full-time equivalent students, a figure that has more than doubled since 2011-2012. MPC’s Online Education program has been commended by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, who noted in MPC’s 2016 accreditation report that, “The team commends the College on its efforts to grow its online offerings, including a 200 percent increase in the number of students enrolled in online sections over the past four years, its support for students and faculty through its innovative Online Team Support a "concierge" approach to student and faculty support, and its website that provides an FAQ and tutorials to students and faculty enrolled in and teaching online courses.”

The grant will further complement MPC’s Online Education program by facilitating the launch of an Online Course Design Academy for MPC instructors, which will focus on preparing more instructors to design and teach and online courses. In addition, the Academy will provide resources to develop online courses in key areas that lead to CTE certificate and degree completion,  reduce the cost of course materials and textbooks for students by integrating Open Educational Resources into online courses, and  increase the number of counselors at MPC who are certified in online counseling.
