Prerequisite/Co-requisite Challenge Procedures
Monterey Peninsula College is required by the State of California to enforce course prerequisites. We believe completing prerequisites before enrolling in higher-level courses will ensure your success as a student. If you have taken the prerequisite at another school or at MPC before Fall 1995, you must complete a “PREREQUISITE VERIFICATION FORM.” You will need to present transcripts or grade reports from other colleges to verify completion of the prerequisite. Satisfactory completion means that you received a grade of “C” or better in each course.
If you do not have such transcripts or grade reports and you wish to challenge the prerequisite, you must file a "PREREQUISITE CHALLENGE FORM” in person with the Humanities Division Office: (831) 646-4100.
Prerequisite Challenge Procedures:
Pick up a Prerequisite Challenge Form from the Humanities Division Office (Located in HSS-109).
Complete the form by identifying one or more of the reasons listed in the Challenge Options. Take the completed form back to the Division Office.
The Division representative will keep the original (white division copy) of the completed Prerequisite Challenge Form.
You will take the Counseling Copy (pink copy) of the Challenge Form to the Counseling Department for prerequisite clearance. The goldenrod copy is kept by you for your records.
Enroll in the course that required the prerequisite challenge.
Department review must take no longer than 5 working days. Check with departments for the schedule for reviews of the challenges.
An original of the Prerequisite Challenge Form will be forwarded by the department/division to the Dean of Student Services Office indicating that the challenge was approved or denied.
You MUST fill out a challenge form in the Humanities Division Office, HSS 109, prior to the exam date.
(ENSL Assessment Test will be offered frequently, please see list below for current dates.) For a map of the MPC campus, please click HERE.

*If the challenge is denied, the student will be dropped from the course and authorized a refund, if applicable.
Credit by Examination
For some courses, a student who has acquired knowledge and/or skills elsewhere may receive college credit for these achievements through an appropriate examination and thereby be awarded course credit. A maximum of 30 units may be earned through credit by examination.
In order to be eligible to participate in credit by examination, a student must have completed at least six units at MPC, be registered in and successfully complete a course other than the one to be challenged, and be in good academic standing at the College. Credit granted by examination does not apply toward the graduation residency requirement.
An eligible student may petition to the Admissions and Records Office and the appropriate academic department to receive college credit by comprehensive examination for a course. The units and grade earned shall be recorded on the student’s permanent record at the end of the term for which the challenge was taken. Appropriate fees will be paid by the student who does not have a fee waiver. No examinations may be given until the student’s Challenge Application has been approved by the Admissions and Records Office staff. The student submits the challenge form approved by the Admissions and Records Office to the instructor. The instructor is to submit the form to the Admissions and Records Office after the student completes the challenge.
Contact the Admissions and Records Office at (831) 646-4002 to receive current information.
