Assessment testing is required for placement in the ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE SEQUENCE above Level 1.

Note: Students may enroll in Level 1 sequence classes ENSL 312/313 or 412/413 without testing.

The English as a Second Language (ENSL) Assessment has three parts:

  • Written Essay (45 Minutes, Timed)
  • Online Listening Comprehension Test (Not timed)
  • Online Reading Comprehension Test (Not Timed)

Allow 2-4 HOURS to complete test.

Placement into classes in the ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ENSL) SEQUENCE will be based on your assessment results.

Re-Assessment allowed AFTER six months, if student has no grade of record in any ENSL Sequence class.

Esta evaluación es para estudiantes que quisieran tomar clases de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ENSL) en MPC, y/o completar la educación general o los requisitos para transferir a otra institución.

To choose between English or ENSL, please answer the following questions:

  • Is English the first language you learned as a child?
  • Did you complete at least five years of education, including high school, in schools where all subjects were taught in English?
  • Do you usually speak English with your friends and/or co-workers?

If you answered “YES” to two or more questions, take the English Assessment.
If you answered “NO” to two or more questions, take the ENSL Assessment.

Please Note: If you choose to register in the beginning level of classes for English or ENSL, you are no longer eligible to assess for English or ENSL classes and you must complete all classes within the English or ENSL sequence.

Please note: if you have difficulty understanding the information on this page or difficulty communicating your basic needs in English, you may take the lowest level ENSL course (ENSL 312/412 and ENSL 313/413) without taking the ENSL Placement Test.

The ENSL Assessments evaluates your English language skill level in reading, writing and listening/speaking for students whose native language is not English.

Las evaluaciones determinan el nivel de conocimientos en lectura y escritura en el idioma inglés para estudiantes cuyo primer idioma no es inglés.

Note: You must have a current application on file with the Admissions & Records department prior to assessment.
