Biography
Karen Lee Yoder serves as the Dean of Student Services – Student Affairs & Athletics at Monterey Peninsula College, bringing more than three decades of experience in higher education leadership, student development, athletics administration, education, coaching, and advocacy. Throughout her career, she has remained deeply committed to advancing student success, equity, inclusion, engagement, and creating transformative educational experiences that help students thrive academically, personally, and professionally.
In her role at Monterey Peninsula College, Yoder provides leadership for Student Services – Student Affairs & Athletics. She works collaboratively across the institution to strengthen the student experience and advance the College’s commitment to student achievement, engagement, equity, and belonging. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in respect, trust, and belief. She emphasizes relationship-building, collaboration, and the development of inclusive environments where students and employees are supported and empowered to succeed.
Prior to joining Monterey Peninsula College, Yoder served as Athletic Director at Solano College, where she led with a vision of building a competitive, values-driven athletics program centered on academic achievement, leadership development, community engagement, and holistic student-athlete success. During the 2025–26 academic year, Solano College Athletics earned the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) Commissioner’s Cup, recognizing the department’s overall competitive success across conference-sponsored sports. Her leadership emphasized strengthening the connection between athletics and the broader educational mission of the institution while creating opportunities for student-athletes to develop as students, competitors, leaders, and engaged members of their communities.
Yoder also serves as Commissioner of the Western State Conference, providing leadership to one of California’s community college athletic conferences. Her conference leadership includes governance, compliance, scheduling, championship administration, institutional collaboration, and initiatives designed to expand opportunities and enhance the student-athlete experience. Working with college presidents, athletic administrators, coaches, and statewide leadership further strengthens her ability to foster institutional alignment and collaboration among diverse constituencies.
Prior to Solano College, Yoder served as Director of Athletics and Physical Education at California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), where she was a member of the President’s Cabinet and served as a CSU Title IX Hearing Advisor. Under her leadership, Cal Maritime Athletics achieved the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Gold designation for five consecutive years, earning a perfect score each year—reflecting a sustained commitment to character, integrity, leadership, sportsmanship, and community engagement. Yoder also contributed nationally through her service on the NAIA National Administrative Council Championships Committee.
During her leadership at Cal Maritime, and previously as Athletic Director at Mission College, Yoder founded Athletics Hall of Fame programs at both institutions, reflecting her commitment to recognizing alumni achievements, celebrating institutional history, and preserving the traditions and legacies of collegiate athletic programs. Throughout her administrative career, she has worked to align athletics with the broader educational mission of the institution while cultivating inclusive, equity-minded environments centered on student development and leadership.
In addition to her administrative and coaching experience, Yoder has served as a Kinesiology and Physical Education faculty member at numerous colleges and universities throughout her career. Drawing upon her academic preparation in physical education and kinesiology and her extensive professional experience, she has taught and supported students in the classroom while contributing to curriculum, instruction, and academic program development. Her experience as a faculty member provides an important perspective to her administrative leadership and has strengthened her understanding of the relationship between teaching and learning, faculty engagement, student services, and student success.
Yoder’s extensive professional background spans the NCAA, NAIA, 3C2A, and CIF and includes experience at UC Davis, UNC Greensboro, Mission College, Diablo Valley College, Napa Valley College, Cal State East Bay, West Valley College, and the Calistoga Joint Unified School District. As an administrator, educator, faculty member, and former Division I head coach, she has consistently focused on developing programs and organizational cultures characterized by integrity, accountability, equity, collaboration, and excellence.
Her coaching career is highlighted by her tenure as Head Softball Coach at UC Davis, where she guided the program through its transition to NCAA Division I competition. Under her leadership, the Aggies captured their first Big West Conference Championship. Yoder was named Big West Coach of the Year and earned national recognition through her service on the NCAA Division I Softball All-American Committee, including serving as Pacific Region Chair.
Before UC Davis, Yoder served as Head Softball Coach at Napa Valley College, where she captured a Bay Valley Conference championship, was named Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year, and led the program to two regional appearances. Earlier in her career at Cal State East Bay, then CSU Hayward, she led the softball program to a Cal Pac Championship and regional runner-up finish and was named Cal Pac Coach of the Year.
A former collegiate student-athlete, Yoder was named a CCCAA All-NorCal Catcher at West Valley College. She continued her playing career at the University of New Mexico on an athletic scholarship and later competed professionally in the Women’s Professional Fastpitch League. Her contributions to athletics have also been recognized through Hall of Fame honors. The 1999 and 2000 CSU Hayward softball teams she coached were inducted into the Cal State East Bay Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024, and Yoder was inducted into the Live Oak High School Hall of Fame in 2015 in recognition of her achievements.
Yoder holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education and master’s degrees in kinesiology, along with an Adaptive Physical Education credential and a current teaching credential in physical education. She also holds multiple professional certifications related to Title IX and civil rights, including training as a Civil Rights Investigator and Title IX Administrator/Coordinator. Her academic preparation has supported a career that bridges instruction, student services, athletics, and educational administration, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.
Across each stage of her career, Yoder has remained committed to the belief that education and athletics can be powerful vehicles for student development, leadership, belonging, and lifelong achievement. As Dean of Student Services – Student Affairs & Athletics at Monterey Peninsula College, she is passionate about bringing people together around a shared purpose, strengthening connections between students and the institution, and building programs and services that provide students with the support, opportunities, and experiences they need to reach their full potential.
