What the Senate Does
The Academic Senate’s primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters, such as curriculum and degree requirements, grading policies, and standards for student success; faculty roles in governance, accreditation, and professional development; and processes for program review, planning, and budget development.
Senate Meetings
The Academic Senate convenes the first and third Thursdays of each month from 2:30-4:30 PM in the Sam Karas Room of the Library, Building #16 on the MPC Monterey Campus.
Senate meetings are public meetings, and campus and community members are encouraged
to attend. The agenda is determined by the Senate Executive Committee one week prior
to each meeting; requests for agenda items should be submitted in advance to senateexeccommittee@mpc.edu.
Academic Senate Executive Board
Leads the Academic Senate and represents the faculty in shared governance. The President serves as the primary liaison between the Senate, college administration, and the Board of Trustees, ensuring that faculty voice is included in academic and professional matters.
Facilitates the campus-wide placement of faculty representatives on committees, ensuring diversity of perspective and broad participation in shared governance. Oversees the onboarding of new faculty representatives through an orientation that includes a review of responsibilities, meeting schedules, reporting procedures, and documentation tools. Provides guidance to support committee work that advances academic quality, equity, and institutional effectiveness.
Academic Senate Current Membership
The Academic Senate is made up of representatives from MPC’s academic divisions and disciplines and are elected by colleagues in their respective areas. Senators serve three-year terms on a staggered schedule, so that one-third of the Senate is elected each academic year.
