Safety Update September 5, 2025
Monterey Police Department reported that a bobcat was seen on Friday night, September 5, 2025, near the Art Ceramics building. The animal was reported to be the size of a medium dog. If you encounter a bobcat, remain calm and keep your distance. Bobcats are naturally wary and typically try to avoid people, posing little threat to humans. When safe contact the police department to report the incident.
What to do if you see a bobcat:
- Keep your distance: Do not approach the animal and never try to feed it.
 - Remain calm: Slowly back away while keeping your eyes on the bobcat.
 - Do not run: Running can trigger the animal's natural hunting instinct.
 - Appear intimidating: If the bobcat follows or comes closer, make yourself look bigger by waving your arms or opening your jacket. Make loud noise by shouting, clapping, or using an air horn.
 - Seek shelter: Find refuge in a vehicle or building if possible.
 - Protect children and pets: Pick up small children or pets without bending over or turning your back to the animal.
 - Fight back if attacked: In the extremely rare case of an attack, fight back and protect your head and neck.

If you see something that feels concerning or any suspicious activity, please immediately report it to MPC Campus Security.
